Environmentally Responsible Waste Disposal

The EPA has identified a number of non-compliant disposal methods that can result in the entry of pharmaceutical compounds into water supplies. All too often, healthcare facilities incorrectly handle waste pharmaceuticals by flushing them down the drain, by placing them in their red bag medical waste, or by simply throwing them into their regular trash. All three routes expose the water supply to potential contamination, either through pharmaceuticals directly entering wastewater or through the leaching of waste materials after they are landfilled.

Reverse Distribution of Pharmaceutical Waste

Pharmaceutical Waste Cannot be Picked up or shipped to a reverse distributor.

Pharmaceutical Waste Cannot be Picked up or shipped to a reverse distributor.
While still a great outlet for DEA Scheduled Controlled Substance, a reverse distributor
is not permitted to transport or dispose of RCRA Hazardous pharmaceutical waste.
Pharmaceutical Waste Disposal is regulated by the Resource Conservation and Recovery
Act (RCRA) of 1976, which is enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Many common pharmaceuticals are hazardous under RCRA and therefore must be
stored, transported, and disposed of in compliance with RCRA requirements.
