Do your employees know the federal and state standards and procedures when dealing with medical or healthcare waste and hazardous waste? Knowing where to find the rules and regulations as well as procedures for waste management in Vermont falls under the guidelines of the Department Of Environmental Conservation and the Agency Of Natural Resources.
We’ll provide you with a few tips to get started.
Dealing with hazardous waste
Vermont’s Hazardous Waste Management Program oversees regulations regarding the generation, transportation, storage, treatment, recycling, and disposal of hazardous waste. Up-to-date regulations, statues, and procedures in regard to those regulations can be found here.
The department also evaluates compliance, and tracking of hazardous waste manifests. They also issue permits to any facility that treats or disposes of hazardous waste. Hazardous waste generators can refer to that department for regulatory assistance if needed.
Detailed information regarding every aspect of hazardous waste management can be found in the state’s regulations. For example:
- Subchapter 2 §7-202: Hazardous waste determination
- Subchapter 3: Requirements for generators of hazardous waste
- Subchapter 7: Manifest, reporting and recordkeeping requirements
Detailed information regarding hazardous constituents and acute hazardous wastes provide additional information that any facility producing such waste or transporting it should know.
Be aware of your hazardous waste generator status to maintain compliance and avoid penalties.
Hazardous waste generator status
Vermont recognizes three categories of hazardous waste generators:
- Large quantity generators (LQGs)
- Small quantity generators (SQGs)
- Conditionally exempt generators (CEGs) – review the Conditionally Exempt Generator Handbook - A Hazardous Waste Management Guide for Small Vermont Businesses.
Generator status is determined by the volume of hazardous waste generated on a monthly basis.
Waste manifests
Any facility in Vermont (small or large quantity generator status) who intends to transport hazardous waste off-site for treatment, storage, or disposal is required to fill out EPA form 8700-22, and, if required, EPA form 8700-22A.
About Sharps disposal
Vermont’s needle disposal initiative requires any healthcare facility (human or animal) that generates more than 50 pounds of regulated medical waste per month to contact a licensed medical waste hauler for compliant disposal. If a healthcare facility generates less than 50 pounds of regulated medical waste each month, discarded needles and sharps are to be placed in a compliant sharps container and disposed of with regular waste.[1]
