Waste Management
Expertise in Rhode Island
MCF Environmental Services have been serving medical clinics, laboratories, education institutions and local businesses for more than 30 years, offering specialist waste collection and disposal services for hazardous and non-hazardous waste streams.
Stay up-to-date with the rules and regulations of Rhode Island as well as federal agencies overseeing medical, infectious, and hazardous waste in the state.
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM), Office of Waste Management supervises medical waste management throughout the state.
The DEM’s Office of Land Revitalization and Sustainable Materials Management directs hazardous waste regulations in the state.
The DEM Office of Compliance and Inspection (OC&I) program oversees hazardous waste evaluation and compliance of all businesses that produce hazardous waste.
The state provides an informative document titled “Hazardous Waste Compliance Workbook for Rhode Island Hazardous Waste Generators” which is a must-read for any business, hospital, or industrial facility that produces infectious, bio-hazardous or other hazardous waste.
Rhode Island’s Code of Regulations, Title 250 (Department of Environmental Management) covers a variety of topics in Chapter 140: Waste and Materials Management. Topics covered within that chapter include:
- Subchapter 05: Solid waste
- Subchapter 10: Hazardous waste
- Subchapter 15: Medical waste
Every waste generator in the state should be aware of, understand, and follow these regulations for compliance.
Note: According to regulations Title 250-140-15-1, hazardous waste not only meets definitions under the DM’s ruling and regulations, but as defined by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and DEM rules and regulations for hazardous waste management.
Transportation of waste off-site
Rhode Island has adopted regulations of the federal government that require an EPA ID number for transportation of hazardous waste off-site. This applies to generators, transporters, and waste treatment or disposal facilities. As such, e-manifests are required in order to appropriately track waste. A waste generator can then track the manifest within the EPA’s e-manifest system. More information can be found here.
Medical waste tracking forms are required for healthcare/medical waste, primarily to identify composition, quantity, origin, route, and ultimate destination of regular medical waste from its point of generation throughout transfers to disposal, treatment, destruction, or long-term storage at another location.
Rhode Island takes the “cradle to grave” approach to waste management. It is the responsibility of the waste generator to ensure appropriate and compliant handling and disposal of waste. That means ability to identify the difference between waste streams such as biohazard, infectious, and hazardous waste so they may be properly contained, accurately labeled, and safely disposed of.
Working with a reputable waste management company like MCF Environmental Services is beneficial in the clarification of state and federal regulations as well as hazardous waste disposable options available to waste generators in Rhode Island.
