J.G. Townsend, Jr. & Co. - Solving a Complex Hazardous Waste Challenge

J. G. Townsend, Jr. & Co., one of Delaware’s largest farming and food processing operations, has served the region for decades with a commitment to safety, sustainability, and operational excellence. Based in Georgetown, DE, the company processes frozen fruits and vegetables and plays a central role in the state’s agricultural economy. When a pressing hazardous waste disposal challenge arose that threatened to delay critical facility work, the company turned to MCF Environmental Services for a swift, practical solution.

/     TIGHT DEADLINES AND LIMITED DISPOSAL OPTIONS

The facility faced an urgent waste management issue involving two large tanks in need of hazardous waste removal before a mid-August 2025 deadline. Several barriers complicated the job: local vacuum services weren’t available in Delaware, the waste required eight hazardous waste totes that couldn’t be routed conventionally, and the generator lacked an EPA ID (legally required for disposal).

To make matters worse, the original hazardous waste vendor revised their pricing after approval, quoting a significantly higher cost than expected. Without a disposal plan in place, the facility couldn’t proceed with essential real estate work, making the situation time-sensitive and high-stakes.

 CHALLENGE
MCF TRUCK

/     CUSTOM STRATEGY AND CROSS-TEAM COORDINATION

The MCF team sprang into action, led by team member Tanerica, who collaborated closely with the client to build a customized plan. Recognizing that the generator had an in-house technician capable of pumping the tanks, MCF avoided delays by sourcing direct-ship supplies from a vendor who could deliver straight to the facility. With logistics being a major hurdle, MCF’s Operations and Transportation team coordinated with J.G. Townsend, Jr. & Co.’s staff to schedule the most efficient pickup possible. To resolve the compliance issue, Tanerica also contacted the Delaware EPA directly on the company’s behalf, facilitating and expediting the generator’s EPA ID setup.

 SOLUTION

/     TIMELY, COST-EFFECTIVE RESULTS

MCF completed the job in July, successfully picking up all eight totes well ahead of the facility’s deadline. By avoiding unnecessary freight costs and shipping supplies directly to the site, the company reduced overall expenses. When the original waste vendor’s final pricing exceeded the budget, MCF quickly pivoted to a new vendor whose quote aligned with the initial expectations. Thanks to this fast, adaptive approach, the project was completed efficiently and without disruption to the facility’s operational goals.

 EXECUTION

/     FULL COMPLIANCE DELIVERED BEFORE DEADLINE

The project was completed on schedule, with all eight totes removed safely in July 2025, well ahead of the facility’s mid-August deadline. MCF’s ability to source materials directly and quickly secure a compliant waste vendor allowed the facility to avoid unexpected costs and stay within budget expectations. With a new EPA ID obtained in under a week and seamless coordination across logistics and compliance, J. G. Townsend, Jr. & Co. was able to move forward with its real estate objectives without disruption, delay, or regulatory risk.
