Expertise in Iowa

MCF Environmental Services have been serving medical clinics, laboratories, education institutions and local businesses for more than 30 years, offering specialist waste collection and disposal services for hazardous and non-hazardous waste streams.

Iowa’s Department of Natural Resources oversees hazardous or other potentially dangerous waste management. Do you know that every generator of potentially hazardous medical or industrial waste must follow state and federal guidelines in regard to its handling, storage, and disposal processes?

Iowa regulations specify that any producer of hazardous waste must have an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ID number. Do you? Are you aware that if any generator keeps hazardous waste on-site for more than 90 days, they are automatically considered a storage facility operator?

Know the rules and regulations.

Infectious and hazardous waste

Hazardous waste must first be a solid waste, according to the EPA – and Iowa. You can find listed characteristics of hazardous wastes here.

Iowa’s regulations for hazardous waste follow those of the federal government. That’s why it’s important to know where they are and what they say. Having a reliable and knowledge waste management partner can make this task easier and ensure compliance.

Reviewing Iowa documents regarding hazardous waste is time-consuming. However, you need to know about Title 11, Chapter 140 regarding application for permits and renewals for generators, transporters, and hazardous waste facilities found under 567-140.3(455B). A portion of the rule states “any private or public person or agency who generates or transports hazardous waste or who owns or operates a facility that treats, stores or disposes of hazardous waste shall notify the department stating the hazardous waste handled by the person in the location and a description of the activity involving the waste.’

Does your facility, hospital, or business do that? Notification is achieved by filing a completed federal EPA form 8700-12.

Iowa’s Department of Natural Resources enforces the states hazardous waste management program, which follows the regulations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). Hazardous waste generators can find their guidelines here. All guidelines regarding handling, storage, and labeling must be followed at the risk of noncompliance.
