Reducing Costs through Effective Waste Segregation

On average, nursing homes and patient-care facilities produce less than 10% of medical waste as a proportion of their total volume of waste generated; however due to poor waste segregation and lack of staff training protocols, many facilities are categorizing between 15% – 25% of their overall waste volumes as medical waste. This overcategorization has a significant impact on costs with medical waste treated at a much higher cost than general trash. Facilities generating less than 1kg of acute hazardous waste (as defined on the EPA’s P-List) have the option to weigh their hazardous pharmaceutical waste volume to meet the criteria of an SQG; however if long term care providers choose not to weigh and document, they must register with the EPA under subpart P of RCRA to keep pharmaceuticals onsite.
